What will the apprentice be doing on site

Machining Technician Apprenticeship

We have an apprenticeship vacancy within a Precision Engineering company specialising in the CNC manufacture of high quality metal components used extensively in Scientific Instruments and manufacture. The apprentice will work towards a Level 3 Machining Technician qualification and their day to day work will include:


• Inspecting the parts being made to a high standard and tight tolerances, working to complex technical drawings. Finishing parts to a good standard (e.g. deburring etc)
• Operating computer numerical controlled lathe.
• Programming and operating of CNC Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM).
• Reading, understanding, and interpreting engineering drawings, including tolerancing, and surface finish requirements.
• Using hand measuring instruments.
• Obtaining, checking and using the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.)
• Off-line programming including high end CAM systems.
• Using mathematical techniques, formulae and calculations within the technical support environment.
• Producing technical documentation that contains all the relevant and necessary data
and information required for the technical support activity being carried out.
• Presenting the technical documentation in the required format ensuring that codes, symbols and other references used in the technical documentation follows agreed UK/international conventions.
• Saving and storing technical documentation in the correct format, location in accordance with organisational and/or customer requirements.
• Carrying out assurance control procedures within an ISO9001 environment.
• Carrying out full quality control procedures.
• Developing effective business and/or customer relationships.
• Contributing to the business by identifying possible opportunities for improving working practices, processes and/or procedures.

38 hours a week
7am- 5.00pm
Monday - Thursday.

This is a flexi job apprenticeship.

The apprentice will need

Level 2 Engineering Qualification is preferred.

Some Engineering based experience would be an advantage

Desirable qualities

• Ability to read and interpret Engineering drawings
• Knowledge of Tooling used to shape material and what type of tool is appropriate for the intended operation
• Associated knowledge of tool feeds and speeds in relation to the material being used
• Knowledge of work holding - how the material is fixed in the machine
• Specific knowledge of the use of parallels in work holding
• Understanding as to how parts can be laid out within the stock material to minimise on downtime and improve efficiency
• Understanding of tolerancing and tolerance stack up: what sort of things affect tolerance and what is achievable
• The importance of surface finish and what things affect it
• An understanding of threads and what types are in common use. The techniques used for cutting
• Understanding of trigonometry
• Knowledge of basic Engineering materials
• Hard working
• Motivated
• Excellent communication
• Passion for Engineering
• Desire to learn and gain experience from experienced members of staff
• Outside the box thinker

Qualifications Required

Level 2 qualification in engineering or equivalent would be an advantage
4 GCSEs MinimumGrade C/4 including Maths. English and a Science

Relevant information about the site

Due to location of site, own transport would be an advantage.
